HYPERCON MATERIALS – Sand, Gravel and Crushed Natural Stone

The supply of the building materials industry in Germany for the production of ready-mix concrete, precast concrete elements and concrete products such as paving stones or patio slabs, for example, consumes over 140 million tonnes of high-quality sand and gravel each year.

Sand and gravel can be found in almost the whole of Germany, with deposits concentrated in the foothills of the Alps, the Upper Rhine, the North German Plain and, in particular, river valleys. Gravel is already frequently replaced by crushed natural stone in numerous applications.

According to the study “The demand for primary and secondary raw materials of the stone and earth industry until 2035 in Germany” published by the Federal Association of Building Materials – Stone and Earth (Bundesverband Baustoffe – Steine und Erden e. V.), the total demand for sand, gravel and natural stone in Germany will be between 504 and 535 million tonnes in 2025.

For 2035, the demand for primary raw materials such as sand, gravel and natural stone is forecast to be between 470 and 555 million tonnes. The study predicts a reduction in the substitution rate of primary raw materials by secondary raw materials when comparing 2016 with 2035.

Demand for raw materials

In 2020, approx. 100 million tonnes of aggregates were used to produce around 55 million m3 of ready-mix concrete in Germany.

  • Approx. 44.0 million tonnes of gravel
  • Approx. 35 million tonnes of sand
  • Approx. 20 million tonnes of chippings
  • Approx. 1 million tonnes of recycled material

In figures, the substitution of primary raw materials will drop from 15.3 % to only 13.8 % or 13.6 % respectively, and the forecast also only predicts the potential for a slight increase, or even a drop in the use of recycled building materials.

It is evident that the German construction and building materials industry cannot survive without sufficient sand, gravel or natural stone.

HYPERCON sees this study as a call to rapidly improve the efficiency with which raw materials are used. Our work is based on the use of waste material and unused stockpiled materials in new formulations, which in the best case still allow a reduction in material consumption.

Smart applications for floor coverings, wall cladding, furniture and tiles in interior and exterior applications enable the regional use of waste material and unused primary resources.

HYPERCON takes a holistic approach to analysing material potential and develops site-specific solutions for raw material suppliers and manufacturers of building materials. HYPERCON technology focuses on formulations for individual applications, customised raw material preparation using patented equipment and proprietary manufacturing processes.
